SmartPant is a new and innovative way to recycle. With our app you get the ability to spend your recycling money in a way that matters to you! Our mission is to make the recycling process more fun and increase the number of people who recycle.

The idea

The idea behind SmartPant arised because we observed that throughout the city and natural areas of Aalborg cans, plastic and glass bottles was spread around on the ground. In areas such as public parks and school campuses where young people and students mainly find oneself we saw an increasing tendency to cans, plastic materials and glass bottles lying around on the ground. Furthermore, the way of recycling haven’t changed through decades and innovation is necessary to encourage a younger target group to recycle. Based on observations, interviews, desk and field research it is possible to conclude that the younger target group, “the digital natives” are the least motivated to recycle cans and bottles.

In Denmark 9 out of 10 bottles and cans are recycled and with our idea and mission we will contribute to ensuring that the last bottle and can will be recycled.

FACTS!!!!

Facts about recycling in Denmark

Recycling is one of the simplest and most important ways to conserve resources and decrease  environmental polution.

In 1978 Denmark introduced the world’s first law on recycling, stating that at least 50 % of all paper and beverage packaging should be recycled. This was the first step on the journey of becoming one of the top recycling countries in Europe. In 1989 the Statutory Order on Waste was implemented in Danish law.

The recycling system works in the following way:

  • The producer has to charge the price of the product as well as a deposit related to the beverage containers and the return system every time a product is sold. Each month Dansk Retursystem A/S (Danish deposit and return system) receives the deposit paid by the producers, which goes to maintenance of the system.
  • Most Danish supermarkets have machines where consumers are able to recycle bottles and cans. When the machines are emptied, the beverage containers are transported to one of the two centers of Dansk Retursystem A/S where each item is registered, counted and sorted. After this process, the organisation pays the refund back to the shops and supermarkets, which then are delivered to consumers recycling their bottles and cans.
  • Additionally, Dansk Retursystem covers the costs related to the recycling of the participating stores.

We are focusing on the increase of recycling and want to create a widespread effect of a desire for everyone to recycle more than they do today. Therefore, with our app we will make it easier and more fun to recycle and make people more aware of the importance of recycling

With these goals we focus on two of the UN’s seventeen world goals:

The main targets that we want to achieve:

12.5 By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.

12.8 By 2030, ensure that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development and lifestyles in harmony with nature

The main targets that we want to achieve:

13.1 Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters in all countries

13.3 Improve education, awareness-raising and human and institutional capacity on climate change mitigation, adaptation, impact reduction and early warning
